Cobram students shoot for victory

Tuesday, February 7 saw Cobram Secondary College and Cobram Anglican Grammar School students, along with other school students in the region, aiming high as participants of a clay shooting competition.

The competition was organised by Cobram Secondary College in conjunction with Sporting Shooters Association of Australia Shepparton branch and was part of the greater GMDSSV Senior Summer Sports Competition.

Cobram Secondary College teachers Craig Hunt and Lachlan White led the school’s six-student team, while shooting was overseen by club members.

“The school has been competing for many years. The kids will rock up, really enjoy it and get a good sense of satisfaction out of the day,” Mr Hunt said.

Along with having fun in a safe environment and trying something different, Mr Hunt emphasised the students learnt a lot of life skills through the shooting.

“Students learn hand eye co-ordination, there’s a lot about responsibility and being good members of society,” Mr Hunt said.

Mr White said the students involved in the clay shooting competition had a great time.

“It's a very heavy element of discipline ... The reaction is usually pretty positive because once again it’s really different compared to a lot of the other sports we can do,” he said.

Mr White said the students get to interact with various members of the community which they might not have had the chance to.

“There are all sorts of people from all sorts of walks of life that we can work with,” Mr White said.

Mr Hunt said the fact the school organised the clay shooting for its students shows the desire for the college to give its students the best opportunities.

“We’re a regional school, but we do have exceptional facilities and opportunities for our students,” he said.

Lachlan Astley was one of the students who took part in the clay shooting competition.

Talking to the Courier, he said he absolutely loved the experience.

“It’s great. The best part is the adrenaline when you hit the target,” he said.
