Council proposes a joint advocacy initiative

The council is calling for support programs and initiatives to be distributed fairly across affected communities, including those that currently fall outside the defined zone boundaries.

Murray River Council Mayor John Harvie said collaboration between relevant councils was key to achieving this.

“By working collaboratively with councils across the Southwest REZ, we can advocate for more inclusive policies that reflect the priorities and needs of all impacted communities,” Cr Harvie said.

“Together, councils can present a stronger case to state and federal governments, promoting a fairer approach to renewable energy development and any associated benefits.”

The proposed joint advocacy initiative would focus on three key priorities, including flexibility in boundary definitions so that affected communities can attain benefits and support provided through the initiative.

The initiative will further call for the authority to extend funding opportunities beyond the current REZ boundaries to those within relevant local government areas.

The equitable distribution of benefits is also emphasised in the initiative in hopes of creating a system to allocate funding based on the level of impact experienced by communities.
