The Yarrawonga Mulwala A Grade have completed their five T20 fixtured matches with a high scoring victory against the Wangaratta Magpies at the Norm Minns Oval in Wangaratta on Sunday.
Captain Reid Clarke won the toss and elected to bat; and his decision paid benefits with Kyle Archibald in his A Grade debut and Matt Casey combining for a 96-run opening partnership from 13 overs. Archibald was dismissed for a well compiled 45 with four boundaries and 2 sixes.
Harry Wheeler batting at three, joined Casey and the pair added 42 before Casey was out for 64 including five boundaries and 4 sixes. Ben Welsh came to the crease with less than two overs to bat and was the final wicket to fall with the YMCC finishing at 3 for 145 off their 20 overs with Wheeler 19 not out.
With a target of over 7 runs an over, Wangaratta Magpies were going to have bat with power, but James Irvine claimed the first wicket in his first over with the score on just 3.
A partnership followed with some big hitting and the Magpies were able to advance the score to 34 in the fifth over when Josh Mallichan struck twice and then just 11 runs later the Magpies were 4 for 45 when Brock McCabe had Bonwick caught by Irvine.
A 23-run partnership steadied the ship for the Magpies and they looked like matching the YMCC with 68 runs off 9 overs.
Again, Brock McCabe struck, and the Magpies lost 3 for 30 to be teetering at 7 for 98 in the 14th over.
In a high scoring game, the Lakers took regular wickets and the Magpies were able to reach the final over needing 21 runs for victory.
However, Angus McMillan put an end to that with his first ball of the over taking the final wicket and the Lakers were victorious by 20 runs and finish the five T20’s with 3 wins, a washout and 1 defeat in the opening round.

Under 16 Bulls
Bulls were all out for 73. Nearly all batters got a start but found a way of getting out but to Delatite’s credit they caught everything that was in the air, even a one hander on the boundary.
With 8 overs to have a crack at them the Bulls currently have them 1-9, with Harry Barker bowling good line and length and Dan O’Brien taking a wicket courtesy of William Turnell’s safe hands at square leg.
The boys will have to bowl and field well next week to stay in the match, but a few quick wickets and it’s anyone’s game.
Under 14 Lakers
The Under 14 Lakers piled on the runs on a batter friendly pitch at Lonsdale Reserve in Mulwala on the weekend.
Under the hot early morning sun skipper Xavier Mitchell won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first.
The innings was set up by a dynamic partnership between the classical Nate Sheridan and the powerful Lucas Eales.
Sheridan played some beautiful shots through the off-side, whilst the entertaining Eales was patient early before setting his sights on the boundary with some well-timed pull shots.
Jeremy Baer and Mitch Adkins were able to find the boundary later in the innings whilst Kade Michael and Max Chadwick played a valuable role in rotating the strike and turning the scoreboard over.
Nate Kreek playing his first game of the season was crucial at the end of the innings with a straight against the fast bowlers to ensure a strong unbeaten partnership with the inform Jobe Fraser.
Fraser hit his third 50 of the season and highlighted his concentration with a patient start before some lusty blows in the last two overs to set up a competitive total 8 for 142 off their 42 overs.
Special thanks to Justin O’Brien and Gus McMillan for the great facilities at Mulwala and to the gun scorer Sally Eales who continues to juggle the scorebook with ‘live scoring’ which is a great way of the Lakers community to follow the game.
Under 12 Rams
This week the Rams were at Vic park and it was fantastic to play on their home deck.
Captain Van lost the bat toss and the Rams were sent in to bat first.
“Old head” Ollie and young gun Darcy were sent out to face the music first, and both retired after their 20 balls and batted beautifully.
Captain Van then came out and kept his head down well, slapping a few around but more importantly keeping out the good balls.
Ben “tea” Coffey was stiff with a really good catch to dismiss him, while Tom and the Goudie boys all faced their full complement and retired.
Ollie, Darcy and Van then came back to smack a few around late with Captain Kreeck finishing the innings with a towering 6.
After 20 overs the Rams best total yet 4/106.
As you could imagine, bowling second Saturday morning in stifling heat was very tough for the boys.
Everyone toiled hard in the heat with Taj and Captain Kreeck picking up a wicket. Unfortunately the Rams fell short this week, but they are genuinely improving week to week and it’s fantastic to hear the boys encouraging each other on the field all the time.
Awards: YMGC- Van Kreeck, Ice Creamery- Ollie Watson, Wingates- Tom Taylor, Game ball- Lucas Pickering outstanding fielding on debut.
