Single glazing vs double glazing
Most windows and glass doors in older homes are single glazed – a single pane of glass fitted within a frame, usually 3-6mm thick.
Double glazing is where two panes of glass are sealed together with a gas-filled space between them, and then fitted within the window frame.
The sealed gas compartment reduces the passage of heat through the glass. Panels are typically 16 - 24mm thick, depending on the application.”
In older homes where double glazing is not an option because of frame size limitations, Low-Emissivity glass (Low-E glass or Smart Glass®) is the next best option.
This is coated with a very thin, virtually clear material that reduces the transmission of infrared rays.
