The 2024 Annual General Meeting of the Yarrawonga Mulwala Historical Society was held at Club Mulwala recently with Kaye Reeves unanimously re-elected for her fifth term as President.

President Kaye’s report on a busy year included reference to the Yarrawonga Mulwala Traffic Bridge’s Centenary which is to be celebrated on December 15 this year.
She reported that the digitising and publishing of the Yarrawonga Mercury newspaper on Trove was proceeding well with another project that has recently been undertaken was the lodging of an application to have the Yarrawonga Customs House heritage listed by Australian Heritage Council.
Other matters covered by her report included that group bookings are resuming and that 37 group tours of the Museum had brought in approximately 400 additional visitors, including school students.
Furthermore, the EFTPOS system for payments was functioning well, Mulwala identity Dicky Twigg’s matchbox collection is now exhibited at the Museum, Father Steve’s historical research papers have been received and a limited number of the “Wilby Walkabout” books have been reprinted and are now available for purchase.
President Kaye thanked the members for volunteering at the museum and the office bearers and the research team for their achievements during the year.
Kaye also thanked Yarrawonga News & Gifts for their ongoing sales of the society’s history book “A Bridge Across Time.”
The Guest Speaker for the evening was Monash University and Royal Historical Society of Victoria’s Ms Rosalie Triolo PhD, MEd, BA, DipEd, OAM, FRHSV.
Rosalie spoke about the sourcing and retention of volunteers, particularly to Historical Societies.
She also complemented the society on the attractive and comprehensive Pioneer Museum as members of the society welcomed Rosalie’s ideas on recruitment of members.
Bill presented with Life Membership
A highlight of the evening was the awarding of Life Membership to Past President Bill Gleeson.
In presenting the award, Treasurer Joan Thom congratulated Bill for his 10 years as President and his involvement in the ‘Save Our Station’ Committee which effectively saved the Yarrawonga Railway Station from demolition.
Joan thanked Bill for continuing to oversee the duty rosters and the group bookings for the Pioneer Museum.
The Society has gained a number of new members over the past couple of years. Nevertheless, there is always plenty of room for new and enthusiastic participants.
