Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourism and Business (YMTB) Executive Noel Wright said membership funds to YMTB coupled with sponsorships help keep events like the Rod Run going and maximise the financial return to the community.
“We try to extend the season – make a quiet weekend busy – and this is what the commitment to the Rod Run was all about 10 years ago.
“Currently we assist with the big Country Week Tennis event, the EC Griffith Cup boat Races along with the Rod Run. But with more member support we could not only sustain these events but create new ones.
“With 505 registered cars, 2,500 people attached to the cars and 10,000 people in Belmore Street on Saturday night along with the Show’n’Shine on Sunday this year’s Rod Run was a huge event for the community and the whole region.
“The economic impact was in excess of $4 million,” Mr Wright said.
YMTB Vice President Michael Coldham said the weekend was fantastic for visitors, locals and businesses.
“We witnessed a fantastic buzz in Yarrawonga over the Rod Run weekend.
“On behalf of the Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourism and Business Board, thank you to the clubs that participated, the Yarrawonga Football and Netball Club for making the oval available at the last minute for the Sunday show and shine, but more importantly to those businesses that support YMTB as members and with sponsorship donations, because without you this type of event does not happen.”
Mr Coldham said YMTB could achieve even more if there were more member businesses and sponsors helping to support such events.
“I invite business leaders to come onboard so we can create one or two more special events (like the Lake Mulwala Rod Run), that showcase our towns and people and bring great business and fun with them for us all.”
