Labor has pledged to invest $44 million for eight new positron emission tomography scanners for better patient care at eight hospitals across Victoria, including at Goulburn Valley Health in Shepparton, should it win re-election this month.

PET scans are imaging tests used to find and monitor the spread of cancers, and diagnose heart disease, brain disorders and other conditions.

It will improve access for those needing the scan for their cancer treatment and adds to the more than $585 million the Labor Government has invested in new medical and surgical equipment since 2014.

**Election pledge:** Premier Daniel Andrews says it is critical to have early access to life-saving care on hand.

Premier Daniel Andrews said the new PET scanners would be able meet demand, reduce out-of-pocket costs, and limit travel time for diagnostic imaging in regional Victoria.

Mr Andrews said having access to a PET scanner close to home made a massive difference to patients and their families.

“It means answers, and critically, earlier access to life-saving care,” he said.

State Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas said the investment was needed to provide the best care for patients, and the government was doing its best to meet Victorians’ medical needs.
