Through this donation, more than 50 FoodShare volunteers are able to distribute over 20,000kgs of food to over 3,000 residents each month.
Moira FoodShare Coordinator James Rouel said that without the support of generous donations, Moira FoodShare would not have the resources to make this possible.
“A study from Foodbank Victoria found that five in 10 people who have employment now find themselves in a position where they are experiencing food insecurity which means the numbers we are assisting has increased also,” Mr Rouel said.
“2022-23 has seen a significant growth as we support residents with inflation, interest rates and floods. 3000 residents or 10% of the local population rely on FoodShare each week.
“As we cover the Moira and Berrigan Shire’s we cover a land mass of 6111km with a population of 39,179 so donations like these are a massive help as 30% of the funding we receive is from the community.
“A generous donation like this one from the ski club means more than 50 FoodShare volunteers are able to distribute over 20,000kgs of food to over 3,000 residents each month.
“We are extremely grateful to the ski club for this donation and their continued support of Moira FoodShare.”
Mulwala Water Ski Club (MWSC) President Matt Holgate said that MWSC are proud to and will continue to support the community in any way they can.
“MWSC is conscious of the important role we play in supporting our local community,” Mr Holgate said.
“Yarrawonga/Mulwala is very lucky to have many support groups who largely rely on volunteers to run these support groups, and a generous local community to fund these groups.
“Foodshare does a fantastic job of supporting people who need assistance in our community. Helping to fund Foodshare aligns with the values of MWSC.
“We have a long association with MHA Care through the various community care services they provide – including Foodshare.”
The ski club has provided donations to several community groups and businesses in the area for many years with Mr Holgate saying that what these groups provide, align with the ski club’s visions and values.
“Mulwala Water Ski Club supports a multitude of community organisations with particular focus on children, sport, health and other worthwhile community projects,” Mr Holgate said.
“Our children are the future of our community and we want them to be the best they can be. Our children will become our leaders.
“Sport engenders teamwork and inclusiveness as well as health and wellbeing. Vibrant sports offering = a vibrant community.
“Health is paramount but unfortunately we are all going to get old and need to rely on our hospital, aged care facilities and other associated health care services. Our aged deserve the best.
“Other worthwhile projects involve anything that brings opportunity and income for the whole community – tennis tournaments, boat races, ski tournaments, hot rods and supporting Yarra Mul Tourism in the many great initiatives they attract and the fantastic work they do.
“Yarrawonga / Mulwala is a great community, with great people and MWSC is, and wants to continue to be, a major contributor to the growth and prosperity of our local community.”
