Storms lash Yarrawonga Mulwala

A fierce storm with peak wind gusts reaching 78km/h hit Yarrawonga Mulwala at around 7pm last Tuesday evening (November 26) bringing with it hail and heavy rain.

Almost 16mm of rain fell between 7pm and 7:30pm on Tuesday in Yarrawonga according to the Bureau of Meteorology’s recording station and a total of 71mm fell in Yarrawonga for the seven days finishing Monday, December 2.

A total of 81.6mm fell in Yarrawonga in November almost double the monthly long-term average of 48.2mm.

An SES spokesperson said Yarrawonga SES volunteers responded to almost 20 Requests for Assistance (RFA) between 6pm Tuesday, November 26 and 9am Wednesday, November 27 to be by far the busiest in the Hume region. Call-outs were largely related to tree falls and building damage.

Homes and businesses throughout Yarrawonga lost power for several hours between 7pm and 10.30pm on Tuesday evening.

The Mulwala township also lost power on the same evening for over seven hours due to powerline damage.

More storms are predicted later this week on Friday and Saturday.
