Yarrawonga 7.6.48 defeated WodongaRaiders Blue 4.2.26.
Yarrawonga hosted the qualifying final against a formidable opponent in Wodonga Raiders Blue at JC Lowe Oval on Sunday.
The opening term saw the Pigeons work hard to push the ball forward and keep it in their forward half for majority of the quarter but couldn’t manage to impact the scoreboard.
Darby Pendergast proved it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog as he continually put his body on the line for his teammates.
Hunter Frauenfelder celebrated in style as the Pigeons eventually scored their first goal and the nerves began to settle.
Leading by only 2 points at quarter time, the match was an even arm wrestle with either team not willing to give up.
One goal to each team seen Yarrawonga lead by only 3 points going into halftime.
Mitchell Loughnan was dynamic and all class with Hunter Frauenfelder and Liam Williams elite ball users who kept their team in the hunt.
Tom Ryan and Xavier Walker were great targets up forward, with an injury to Xavier the undefeated Pigeons entered the final quarter without their full forward and in unfamiliar territory, trailing by 2 points.
The final quarter Yarrawonga stamped their authority.
Jack James and Griffin Surrey were quiet in the first half but turned it on in the 2nd half dominating in an already quality midfield line-up.
The presence of Mac Pendergast impacting across half forward was inspirational and all the leaders stood up, as the Pigeons kicked 4 goals to none to book a place in the preliminary final and earn the week off next week.
