First responders’ inaugural ‘000 cup’
What an excellent night this turned out to be. Majority of those that participated are actively involved/employed as a First Responder with either Police, Fire Brigade, Ambulance, or SES.
Staff shortages restricted some of these responders from attending. Many present were local volunteers that our rural area depend on. These people, men and women, who as soon as they hear the fire siren, stop what they’re doing and head to the station to man a truck.
Groups that were represented were: Katamatite Fire Brigade, Yarrawonga Police, St James Fire Brigade, Wilby Fire Brigade, Yarrawonga SES, Tungamah Police, Tungamah Fire Brigade and a few “Tungamah ites” to make up numbers.
Many locals came down to support the night, as usual and show their respect for the regions First Responders. Bowls was a new activity to many, some can forget a future in the game, but many showed a natural aptitude, and we hope to see them on a green somewhere in the future, Tungamah would be great.
This night was the brainchild of Tungamah Bowls Club, but major sponsors on the night were Nagles Butchers, Crusty Loaf and Woods Bus Lines.
These generous sponsors are loyal to the club and didn’t hesitate when approached to provide for this inaugural event.
President Muz O’Halloran transported the Yarrawonga contingent of actual First Responders so they could have a night of enjoyment, fun and purely relax without worrying about getting that phone call.
A call to attend to a domestic dispute, or calm some irate visitors to town, attend a campfire left unattended or a roadside ignited by a tossed cigarette butt or worst of all an accident that might involve a local they know.
This is their daily expectation and seldom get the accolades they deserve. They also attend schools or clubs to educate, advise and encourage others to be involved in the rewarding experience of giving to the various communities they serve.
Many contribute to the community in other ways by being involved in local sports and other organisations. All deserve our respect and admiration for the occupation they have chosen this includes our local volunteers.
After a night of relaxation, attempting to achieve at a new sport, meeting likeminded people and enjoying country hospitality the night came to an end.
Winners of the Inaugural ‘000 Cup’ - were the St James Fire Brigade team of Gavin Fear, Stephen Murphy, Anthony Beggs and Jenny Beggs.
This team had a decided advantage as most knew how to play bowls. An interesting reason as to why?
Many years ago when St James had a resident Policeman / First Responder, Constable Haydn Smith started a six-week competition for non-bowlers, this became known as Haydn’s night and continues today.
Many from these nights now bowl e.g. St James Fire Brigade, so appropriate that this particular team was victorious
Runners Up: Tungamah Fire Brigade, Pam O’Dwyer, Steve Butcher, Brian Wiseman and Nick Gibson, well done to a team of non-bowlers for your achievement.
Place getters: Katamatite Fire Brigade, Wilby Fire Brigade, Yarrawonga Police, Yarrawonga SES and Tungamah “Ites”.
Special thanks to our own locals both bowlers and non-bowlers that attended providing assistance where needed, playing bowls, providing salads, serving and general hands on. Thank you.
