The Rutherglen Cats have delivered another strong performance at home to defeat Wahgunyah in their round 12 game of the Tallangatta and District Football and Netball League.
Another solid crowd was greeted with a cold winter's afternoon that brought with it steady rain for the duration of the senior game.
Prior to the first bounce, the senior playing group welcomed in former club captain Ian Kay to present first game player Mitch Francis with his first senior jumper. Mitch has been playing consistent football at Under 17 level this year and was rewarded for his strong form. Ian spoke of the pride that comes with seeing young Rutherglen people play football at their home club and acknowledged the importance of enjoying the occasion.
From the first bounce and across the four quarters the Rutherglen team executed fundamentals more effectively than the opposition. Jake Meyer, Jyda House, James Tanner and Jarryd Hatton looked ominous in front of the ball, receiving quality supply from the Rutherglen midfield group, led by Thomas Kilpatrick in the ruck.
The Rutherglen defence, led by co-coach Dylan Van Berlo intercepted the ball at will. In conjunction with Bennett Thomas, Tory Oats, Mitch Cofield, Charlie Beattie and Ben Jones the defence started several attacking plays which resulted in scores for Rutherglen.
The highlight of the day was the goal to first game player Mitch Francis, much to the delight of many of his Under 17 teammates sitting behind the goals at the northern end of Barkly Park.
Reserves
Off to a hot start the Cats came out and started strong with Jac Holmes giving first use out of the ruck, with Josh Pagan kicking three goals in the first.
To Wahgunyah’s credit they clawed their way into the game keeping us to one goal in the second.
After halftime the Cats got back to playing unselfish football finishing off with an 89-point win.

The Rutherglen thirds took on an under manned Wahgunyah side at home.
Captain Archer Colvin continued his strong season form providing drive from the centre.
Aidan Berriman was also dynamic through the midfield and linked up with Flynn Verhulst who always provides running and a pumping long kick into the forward line.
At the end of the first quarter Wahgunyah were held scoreless and Rutherglen held a 41-point lead.
Charlie Poole was also important through the centre, and an even performance across the mids saw a 75-point lead at the end of the first half.
To Wahgunyah’s credit they battled hard in the third quarter and managed to score 2 goals against the flow of play.
Rutherglen really turned the screws in the last quarter and scored 65 points to nil.
Harry Chandler was the beneficiary of the work through the centre and managed to convert 6 majors.
Aidan Berriman 5 goals, and Logan Poole 4 goals. Bryce Maloney in his Under 17s debut scored a couple.
A strong team performance today, with contributors all over the ground.

Back at home again this week for our Under 14 Cats in the local derby against the Wahgunyah Lions. The first quarter was a close tussle with Wahgunyah hitting the scoreboard for a major, and Rutherglen converting three.
The Cats’ side was once again capably led by Captain Dustin Fisher who cleared the ball through the centre and contributed 2 goals.
Arthur Morris was also a strong contributor in the midfield, and Rutherglen went into the long break with a 21-point lead.
Rutherglen managed to break the shackles in the third quarter, and Bryce Maloney had his best game of the season slotting 3 majors and worrying the Wahgunyah back line.
Callum Potter and Aiden Sibraa also chimed in for 3 goals each. A goal by Zac Saville means every player on the list has scored a major for the season which shows the versatility and teamwork displayed by the side. Thurgoona awaits us next week away from home.

Netball
A Grade
The conditions were very wet and slippery this week. It was a physical contest from the first whistle, with Cats defenders Kath and Bylee working hard together to shut the shooters down.
It took a while for the girls to warm into this game and change our game play to suit the wet conditions, but when we executed our game plan, we played well.
Unfortunately, in the second half our defender went down with an injury and made for some changes which we welcomed back Kayla.
Jess Oats was an absolute powerhouse through our mid court displaying her superior fitness and work ethic to get her hands on every ball and Ally was doing a great job at WA. Unfortunately with Wahgunyah quick off the mark to get a lead on us from the start resulted in us going down.

Unfortunately, the girls went into this week with half our side away, it was a great time to bring up Holly, Faith, Cadie, Tayla and Milly from under 15s.
With these changes and despite the weather the girls gave it a good crack and played some good patches of netball.
