Numurkah secured the win after an extremely close match with Shepparton. The eventual winning margin was 7 games but the contest could have gone either way.
Shepparton were the minor premiers and Numurkah had to play at their absolute best to win.
Shepparton got off to a great start with two wins in the first three doubles to take a 5-game lead. Whilst they didn’t quite secure a win Ellen Bruce and Lucy Bassett secured some late games to lose 4/8 with the few extra games proving beneficial at the end of the day.
In the round of singles Numurkah were able to regain a slender lead. This was on the back of dominating results by Jack Bassett dominating to win 8/1 and Grant Chappell in great form to win 8/2.
Lucy Bassett had an amazing fightback after being 3/7 down Lucy saved five match points to eventually win a tie breaker 8/7.
On the back of these results Numurkah went into the last three doubles with a 5-game lead.
Jack Bassett and Mark Mills had a convincing 8/3 win to extend the lead. When Tess Bassett and Grant Chappell won their mixed 8/7 Numurkah were home.
Congratulations to the team consisting of Grant Chappell, Ellen Bruce, Jack Bassett, Lucy Bassett, Tess Bassett, Mark Mills and Nick Fenaughty.
Thank you to Numurkah for being so welcoming to so many Yarrawonga players. The partnership has enabled Yarrawonga’s better players to compete at the highest level in the region.
Tuesday Mens Tennis
Tuesday night saw the Grand Finals being played for the Mens Tennis. It was a sensational night for a hit and as usual a lot of fun was had.
There were A Grade, B Grade and C Grade Finals. Everyone else had a hit in the consolation finals to ensure everyone was there for the final nights.
In the prestigious A Grade Final Laver played Federer. After the first round of matches each team had won a set with Federer 2 games ahead after a strong 6/1 win by Damian Cook and Hamish Cole. The next two matches again saw sets shared but Laver had taken a 2 game lead after Jamie Hicks and Fred Exton won 6/0.
The last two sets were very close but Laver were able to claim both sets 6/4 to win the night and the title by 6 games.
Congratulations to Aidan Humphry, Fred Exton, Jamie Hicks and Xavier Chessells on winning A Grade.
Special mention to Fred Exton who has won his first A Grade medal after playing in the competition for 20 years.
Also well done to Federer consisting of Damian Cook, Hamish Cole, Gareth Oughton and Corey Beggs on an excellent season.
B Grade turned out to be a non-event with one player being unable to make it. The players still had a good hit and plenty of laughs in the three sets they played.
Lendl winning the night 5 sets to 1 against Agassi. Well done to Lendl players Josh Buerckner, Tyler Lovell, John Arnold and competition Most Valuable Player Scott Jaques.
In C Grade Borg and Becker battled it out. Right from the outset Borg were ruthless and keen to claim the silverware.
Borg won the night 5 sets to 1 with Andrew Brew and Trent Head both undefeated.
At the conclusion of the night competition organiser Ash Wheaton was glowing in his praise of everyone involved.
There were 13 teams of four players meaning there was plenty of action each week. Thanks to the numerous fill-ins that played during the year ensuring that everyone had a hit each week.
Thank you to Waterside, Pizza, Pasta and Grill who greatly subsidised the weekly pizzas ensuring the deck was always full at the end of each night.
