The AFL Goulburn Murray probe into Mooroopna resulted from a former player spilling the beans on the club’s alleged salary cap management issues.
AFL Victoria is taking a tough stance on salary cap breaches with the Alexandra Football Club slapped with a $40,000 fine, with $15,000 suspended for three years, for salary cap breaches.
It was also stripped of four premiership points this season which it failed to overturn in an appeal.
Sunraysia Football League clubs Robinvale-Euston and Irymple have also also been hit with fines of $11,500 and $2000 respectively for salary cap breaches.
Big haul but not the most
Got a call from a reader last week inquiring whether James Lloyd’s 19-goal haul for Murchison-Toolamba against Undera two weeks ago was a Kyabram District League record.
I had to inform him it wasn’t even close.
Violet Town’s Craig Whelan, who booted 34 goals in his team’s 56.22 to 2.5 demolition of Ardmona in round 12 of the 2012 seaso, has the record safely in his keeping.
Whelan kicked 164 goals that season and Violet Town won the flag.
Rushworth’s Rob Osborne also had a day out in the 2017 season when he booted 28 goals against Ardmona and finished with 100 goals for the season.
Former Bombers are playing well
Former Kyabram premiership players were well to the fore in Moama’s win over Tongala in Murray Football League on Saturday.
Liam Barrett, Jack Sheldon, Brad Edwards and Tom Holman were named Moama’s best, while Dominic Watt and Mitch Gugliotti were among the best for Tongala, which took the battle right up to Moama in the clash at Tongala.
Request for information
Kyabram’s Vera Gemmill has been in touch with a couple of queries.
She was wondering how her late husband Reg could play in both the senior and reserves Kyabram premiership sides in the GVL in the 1948 season.
Well in that year the senior grand final was held a week prior to the reserves grand final and Reg and legendary Kyabram player and the GVL’s first Morrison medallist Wilf Cox played in both flag-winning teams with the Bombers (then known as the Robins) that year.
Vera’s other requests may be a bit harder to get an answer for.
She recalls attending a Kyabram Football Club awards evening in the 1950s with her husband being presented with a black sports bag, now proudly owned by her and Reg’s grandson, Luke Gemmill.
Vera and Luke would love to know if anyone can remember who presented the bag to Reg and what year it was.
If anyone out there can remember Vera would appreciate a call on 0409 521 032.
Milestone day
The Scobles were out in force for Adam Scoble’s milestone 100 games with Girgarre Football Club on Saturday.
Adam’s two young sons Angus and Isaiah also were in the team which celebrated the milestone with a big win over Violet Town.
Angus has been playing for the Bendigo Pioneers and Tongala this season, but got a clearance for the day to join his father and brother in the threesome for the first and probably only time in a memorable family experience.
Girgarre’s big win was also extra icing on the Scoble cake on the day.
Another good one from Thomsons
The Thomson name has been synonymous with good trotters for decades and they may have another smart one in Prettyboy Harry.
Prettyboy Harry is trained by Kyabram horseman Brent Thomson who is the son of Russell Thomson, who enjoyed his share of preparing extra smart trotters down the years.
Brent produced Prettyboy Harry for an impressive win at only his fifth start at the Yarra Valley meeting last week.
Brent was able to get the son of Majestic Son into three back one-out sit for the latter part of the race and when he let him go in the back straight he proceeded to reel in his rivals swiftly with a good turn of speed and go onto an easy 7.3m win over Sundays Shadow and favourite Salski in smart 2:01.6 mile rate time for the 2150m trip.
Prettyboy Harry was having only second start in this campaign, but had given a sample of his ability late last year in his first three runs when he saluted at Maryborough.
Prettyboy Harry is out of the Keystone Salute mare Prettygirl Lassie who won four races and has left another extra smart trotter in Sebastian Boy a winner of seven races from 23 starts.
Thomson wasn’t far off a trainer-driving double at the meeting, finishing second with another of his trotters, Sky Lindy, who was rolled by the 80/1 shot Sabihalil.
