While South Australia finished in seventh out of nine spots on the ladder, Makenzie, a leg-spin bowler, proved the selectors had made the right call by taking twelve wickets at an average of 14.75.
Taking four wickets for 31 in 4.4 overs in her first one day match against Tasmania, the 14 year-old went on to become the top wicket taker for South Australia and the fourth highest wicket taker for the tournament.
Makenzie was rewarded for her remarkable performance by being selected for the Cricket Australia Team of the Tournament and was presented with a baggy green cap during the National Championship presentations.
She was one of only two South Australian players to be chosen.
Makenzie’s parents, Danuel and Rebecca, were present for her first five matches, before returning to Adelaide for work commitments.
Her Nanny Lynne and uncle Matt, both residents of Deniliquin, also made the journey to Hobart and were fortunate enough to see all matches in full.
They even had an opportunity to spend time with former Australian and WBBL player Elyse Villani, who has had extensive experience in Australian cricket.
She recently won her third Women’s Domestic Player of the Year in four seasons, with Tasmania.
Villani praised Makenzie’s skills as a cricketer, and said she has the potential to add to Australian Women's Cricket’s premier leg spin stocks into the future.
