Kyabram’s “flagship” team, KLTC Section 2, and Section 3 minor premiers” KLTC Redbacks will be looking to go that one step further to cap a tremendous season for both teams.
KLTC Section 2 defeated Numurkah 7-63 to 4-54
In yet another impressive win against a quality opponent, Kyabram’s number 1 team delivered a strong brand of tennis to show that they will have a big say in this year’s final series.
Regan Moore, now undoubtedly, the number one male tennis player in Section 2, played with complete dominance against Numurkah’s highly regarded Elliott Small recording an impressive 6-0 win.
In the number 2 men’s single’s, Mitch Cox continues to produce reliable and strong support for his team with a hard-fought win against Numurkah’s talented youngster Hudson Storer. Cox’s experience and consistency gave him a 6-4 win.
In the mens double’s, Justin Wearne provided excellent back up for KLTC, partnering Moore and Greg Tarrant to 8-6 wins.
Wearne, along with the experienced Tarrant, will be integral members of this team during its finals campaign.
In the ladies singles, Kyabram’s young talent Katerina Wearne came up against the ever-reliable and determined Caitlyn Price from Numurkah.
Although going down 1-6 to Price, a past Premier 1 player, the experience gained from this encounter will be invaluable for Wearne, who will be eager to produce an impressive brand of finals tennis.
In the second ladies Jade Christoe outclassed her opponent recording an excellent 6-2 win.
In the two ladies doubles, honours were shared by both teams with Abbey Prycroft and Christoe notching a resounding 8-3 victory.
Unfortunately Prycroft and Wearne had to contend with the competitive Price and her partner, going down 2-8.
In the mixed, Kyabram’s Tarrant and Pycroft recorded their team’s only win 8-3 with Cox and Katerina Wearne just going down 7-8.
KLTC finished third on the Section 2 ladder.
The side will play Shepp Demons in the first semi-final on Saturday.
If it wins it will play in the preliminary final on Sunday.
If it loses it is out.
According to scribe Central Umpire, on current form KLTC should go in as ‘’the favourite’’.
Section 3 KLTC Redbacks defeated KLTC Bombers 10-88 to 3-47
Minor premiers KLTC Redbacks gave their sister side a tennis lesson in their last-round encounter on Saturday.
The Redbacks, in dominant form, showed why they will be a force to reckon with in this year’s final series.
Although there were not too many highlights for the Bombers on the day, they were able to boast impressive wins in both men’s singles.
Will Worsfold, promoted to number one singles, came up against arch foe Blake McMeekin.
The two great mates always have a battle royal and, although, the scoreline did not quite show it this week, the determination and competitive spirit by both players was certainly worth watching.
Worsfold took the singles 6-2 to cap an impressive season for him on the tennis court.
In the number two singles, the Bombers’ Ben Dickens had too much firepower for Tyler Schade.
Although going down this week, Schade, in the finals series, will be looking for the chase everything down, never say die attitude that has been synonymous with his game during the season.
The Bombers also boasted a well-earned 8-5 win to Worsfold and George Brega in the number one doubles against Ian Robinson and Blake McMeekin.
Brega’s return to competition tennis this year has been a breath of fresh air to the club and competition with his stroke play and experienced tennis smarts being a highlight during his matches.
In the remaining men’s doubles, the Redbacks’ Darren Woodcock showed why he will be integral to his team’s finals success this year.
Woodcock combined efficiently with the youthful Schade taking their doubles 8-3 and then partnering Ian Robinson for an 8-1 victory.
A big shout out to young Hugh Cunningham who got the call up from the Bombers this week.
Hugh came up against a considerable amount of power and experience in his encounters on Saturday, but his resilience and excellent attitude will definitely set him up for future tennis success.
Well done Hugh.
The Redbacks’ “Awesome Foursome” in the ladies were in total control from start to finish throughout the day’s proceedings.
Marg Haw, Sonya McCraw and Susie and Lauren Bennett were impressive, to say the least, again only conceding nine games out of a possible 32 in their ladies’ doubles.
It is no secret that this talented quartet will play a vital role in its team’s finals success in the coming weeks.
The Redbacks completed an impressive pre-finals hit-out taking all four mixed.
In the number one mixed though, Robinson and Haw had to pull out every ounce of experience against a competitive Bombers combination in Ben Dickens and Alisha Cunningham.
In a nail-biting encounter, Robinson and Haw scrambled back from a 7-3 down deficit to finally overrun their determined opponents 8-7.
The Redbacks will journey to Mooroopna on Saturday to take on second-placed Numurkah.
A win for the Kyabram team will skyrocket it straight into the grand final at Cobram on March 16.
A loss would mean it would have to front up again on the next day to confront the winner of the first semi.
Speaking to Redbacks selectors, this is definitely not the preferred option.
