An agonizing 1 point loss has sent Mulwala down to fifth on the Murray League ladder.
After Cobram kicked the first goal of the match, Mulwala answered with 3 of their own through the hard running of Max Hemphill and some straight kicking from Jack Sutherland to take a handy lead into quarter time.
A brilliant running goal at the start of the second quarter was kicked by Will Gorman and it looked like the ‘hot n cold’ Lions were on fire again.
The heavy Cobram ground soon slowed the warmth of the Mulwala players as Cobram began to push back hard in defense and run and carry the ball through the middle of the ground to heap pressure on the Mulwala backline.
Beau Seymour, Dylan McNamara and Josh Eder were the catalysts in defense keeping Mulwala in the match as Zach Scott and Charley McKenna were using their speed to break open the Cobram flood and keep the score ticking over in the second and third quarters, however the opposition were making the most of their opportunities.
In arrears on the scoreboard by 10 points going into the last quarter it was all Mulwala as the midfield worked tirelessly and goals to Jackson Meade and Will Gorman brought Mulwala within kicks of victory.
Mulwala were attacking the goal line in a frantic final ten minutes of the match and were inches away from taking the lead on multiple occasions as Cobram held on gallantly to inflict an agonizing 1 point defeat to the team.
Reserves
Cobram 5.11.41 def by Mulwala 7.6.48.
The Reserves team continue to find ways to win games of football and further cement their position at the top of the ladder.
Cobram came out firing in the first quarter and Mulwala was under immense pressure in the backline as Cobram took a 10-point lead into quarter time which should have been more if not for the hard work of Tim Cooper, Nathan Beasley and Seb Hargraves.
Matt McLachlan and Austin Frauenfelder took control of the midfield in the second quarter as Muwala began to surge forward in waves.
Dylan Robinson was silky as always in front of goal as Mulwala gained the ascendancy through his forward work and the sturn defensive work of Lach Wood and Jye Brennan.
Jack (the other John) Burns was proving he is a better second’s player than a thirds player and the Psaltaris twins who haven’t grown since fourths made a welcome return as the team fought out a tough win.
Goals: Dylan Robinson 4, Matthew McLachlan 2, Cameron Nye 1.
Best: Nathan Beasley, Dylan Robinson, Austin Frauenfelder, Matthew McLachlan, Jye Brennan, Lachlan Wood.
Thirds
Cobram 7.3.45 def Mulwala 4.13.37.
The Thirds performed the amazing feat of being the teacher and the students simultaneously and gave themselves a valuable lesson in football where poor kicking is poor football.
Cobram controlled the first quarter and if not for the hard work of Ryan Cameron and Jordan Ibbott in the backline would have taken a better lead into quarter time.
The rest of the game was all Mulwala as they attacked the goal front aggressively only to be let down by inaccuracy at goal.
Jai Sneddon was brilliant throughout the game finishing with 3 of the teams 4 goals but the 13 points kicked in the final scoreline would be the undoing of the team in a match that will still give them confidence in their ability to match it with the top teams.
Goals: Jai Sneddon 3, Baxter Donovan 1.
Best: Jai Sneddon, Baxter Donovan, Levi Saunders, Jordan Ibbott, Ryan Cameron, Van Kreeck.
Fourths
Cobram 5.7 def Mulwala 12.4.76.
The excitement of a top of the ladder clash between the two undefeated sides in the competition was not lost on the Mulwala boys who were keen to prove themselves against their Cobram counterparts.
An even first quarter where both sides were competing well on the large Cobram ground saw Mulwala take a slender lead into quarter time through the hard work of Hayden Stephens in the ruck and Axel Saunders in the middle of the ground.
The second quarter, however, belonged to Mulwala as Henry Donovan took it up a notch in the forward line and the Mulwala onballers began to gain control as the boys slammed on five unanswered goals.
Logan Cooper, Jackson Smith and Fletcher Woodhead were controlling the ball brilliantly in defense as Nate Leith and Axel were tearing apart the Cobram midfield with precise kicking into the forward line.
The entire team played their roles to perfection as they roared away to a 39 point victory to sit alone at the top of the Murray League ladder.
Goals: Henry Donovan 6, Axel Saunders 3, Nate Leith 1, Reed Phillips 1, Hugo Varndell 1.
Best: Axel Saunders, Henry Donovan, Nate Leith, Hayden Stephens, Jackson Smith, Logan Cooper.
