Renowned local waterskiers Abbey and Macy Hicks will take on the challenge along with ‘adopted’ locals, multiple barefoot skiing world champion Keenan Derry and fellow Australian teammate Connor Rodgers who have both been working in the Mulwala Water Ski Club pro shop assisting with coaching over the summer.
Both Abbey and Macy were taught to ski by their father Kyle with Abbey being a part of three national winning teams and a number of state and national barefoot titles.
She is currently living in the Gold Coast and a part of the Sea World Ski team.
At the 2021 Nationals held in Mulwala, Macy won the Under 23 female’s division, which was a great feat after she had been unable to ski for around twelve months with a foot injury.
Kennan Derry is an adopted ‘local’ to watch out for who is ranked number one both nationally and in the world. Kennan also has three Australian records, one Oceania record, eight Australian titles and two world titles.
After being introduced to waterskiing when he was four years old he has never looked back and has been able to travel the world competing.
His fellow Australian teammate Connor Rodgers also has a number of nationals titles to his name, taking out the third overall standings in open men’s when competing in Mulwala in 2019.
With numerous locals to compete in the 2023 IWWF World Barefoot Championships, Max Kirwan Water Ski Park will be the place to be from next Tuesday to Sunday.
