DDCA life member Gerry Corrigan said there are still a few things that need to be finalised before the new addition to the program can be revealed.
To be held October 11 and 12, the celebrations will coincide with the first round of the 2024/2025 Murray Valley Cricket Association season for the Deniliquin Rhinos Cricket Club - Deniliquin’s only cricket team.
The Rhinos requested the opening game against Barooga be played at Deniliquin’s Memorial Park.
It is hoped the official opening of the new cricket clubrooms be held the same weekend.
It will be the club’s first reunion event since 1998.
Organisers are still seeking and sourcing memorabilia to be displayed as part of the event.
Corrigan said the latest game he has researched was Wakool’s undisputed B-grade season in 2000/01.
Reporting on the game in the Pastoral Times read as follows:
It’s not often a season in any sport can be described as perfect, but Wakool completed this rare feat in 2001.
Wakool wrapped up the best-of-three grand final series against Hay in the awesome fashion in which it dominated the competition all season.
After winning game one by four wickets the previous Sunday, Wakool ended Hay’s premiership hopes by a thumping 110 runs at Memorial Park on Saturday.
The weekend’s win completed a clean sweep for the ‘Koolies’, following on from an undefeated season and a One Day Cup win in February.
As usual Wakool went about its business in a nonchalant fashion on Saturday, batting out its allotted 45 overs in scoring 9/140.
In reply Hay suffered an embarrassing batting collapse following some ruthless bowling from the miserly Wakool attack.
Although Wakool’s premiership glory came through a tight knit team effort, it was club veteran Bill Hulands who received the majority of applause from his teammates at the weekend’s grand final series.
Hulands played his 200th consecutive match for Wakool setting a club record.
Final score: Wakool 9/140 def Hay 30.
