Nagambie co-captain relishing KDL grand final underdog status

With conditions set to be perfect at Mooroopna Recreation Reserve, Nagambie co-coach Brayden Biggs was confident the side would have a bumper crowd behind it at 2.30pm on Saturday.

“We’ve got four sides in (to grand finals), so there should be a fair few there from Nagambie,” Biggs said.

“It’ll be a big day in general.

“We set out the goal at the start of the year that we wanted to make the grand final, and now we want to win it.

“So we didn’t feel over-emotional or anything like that (to be making the grand final). We’re just happy to be there.”

Nagambie faced Lancaster in the qualifying final of the Kyabram District League, where the Wombats came out on top by 26 points.

While Lancaster looks to win back-to-back grand finals, the experience of winning premierships is not something the Lakers lack.

Several players will be looking to collect their fifth premiership medal with Nagambie.

Biggs described these players’ knowledge as an asset.

“We have a fair few leaders in the club now, and they were a lot younger when we (Nagambie) were winning those flags, and that’s definitely going to hold us in good stead,” he said.

“It’s a completely different side now to when they were winning in 2019 (the last time Nagambie won the premiership).

“No doubt we’re going in as underdogs.

“The young boys, they don’t know how to play any differently; they just take the game on, and they’ll hopefully be doing that on Saturday.

“Our ball use probably going inside 50 hasn’t been the greatest the last month or so, but we’ll look to rectify that this week, and hopefully Patty (Patrick Rattray) gets on the end of a few of them.

“We’re looking for him to have a big game.

“The midfield is probably where it is going to be won.

“We’ve got some good midfielders in the Fothergill brothers and Rielly Old and Tom Barnes.

“They (Lancaster) will be looking at getting on top of them, but hopefully they (the midfielders) can get the job done.”

The senior side will cap off a huge day of grand finals for the Lakers as their 13-and-under netball, B-grade netball, and under-18s football teams are all in the big dance.

The club will have its fingers crossed, hoping it returns to the lakeside town with all four flags.
