Round 13 saw the Rutherglen Cats head to Thurgoona for the league’s Indigenous Round.
A big thank you to Dan McAlister and the Thurgoona Football Netball Club for a fantastic day to celebrate our First Nations People.
The theme ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud’ was showcased the whole day with both clubs showing their respect.
The Cats have been looking for a scalp from a team above them and had their sights firmly set on the dogs.
The first half of football saw a very tight tussle between the two teams with Thurgoona holding a 9-point lead at the half, but the third term would see the Dogs over-power the Cats in a 7 goal to 2 quarter to lead by 49 points at the final break.
The Cats had a lot to play for in the last and managed to outscore Thurgoona in a 3 goal to 2 term, but the damage was done with the Cats going down by 32 points at the final siren.

A cracking first quarter saw the Cats trail by two goals. The boys battled again kicking three goals to their 4. It was anyone’s game at halftime with the Cats jumping out the gates kicking two goals to be behind by 5 points, but Thurgoona got three quick ones late to take the momentum into the last.
Thurgoona kicked 4 goals in the 4th quarter to seal the game, but the Cats never gave up and fought till the end.

Cats 10.12.72 def Thurgoona 3.9.27.
A depleted line up due to illness and injuries saw Rutherglen take to the ground with only 18 players. Thanks to Brodie Upton for playing injured and a number of the boys for playing sick. The boys had a great first half which saw them go into the half time break with a six-goal lead.
This provided a buffer for the boys who were beginning to run out of steam. It was still a great game to watch with Snowy Barnes and Archer Colvin combining well in the centre to feed it to the forwards Ethan and Harry with Ari Pinn chipping in with a few good marks and Lucas Moore playing in an unfamiliar position, contributing with two goals.
The back line led by Charlie Poole and Fred Jackson and well supported by Aidan Berriman and Riley Cosgrove played their part throughout the game stopping any forward thrust from Thurgoona.
Sonny Enever-Cooper did a great job to keep the Thurgoona full forward goalless for the game.
Special mention to Baylee Morton and Mitch Francis who ran the whole game.
Goal kickers: Ethan Greggor 4, Harry Chandler 2, Lucas Moore 2, Mitch Francis 1 and Archer Colvin 1. A great game for the boys who are looking forward to a week off to recover and regroup.
Awards: Rutherglen Pizza – Charlie Poole, Silver Key Café – Ari Pinn, Corowa Sportspower – Riley Cosgrove, Schnitz Albury – Mitch Francis, Coaches Award – Lincoln Barnes.

Rutherglen travelled to Thurgoona and were faced with some cold and frosty conditions. We knew Thurgoona were going to be a hard task at home as this was their last shot at finals.
The first quarter was an even contest as the greasy ball was difficult to control. Liam Colvin was strong in the backline and continued his good second half of the season's form.
He linked up well with Jayke O'Malley, Lucas Zani and Erik Fuge who had one of his best games. Rutherglen managed to pull away slightly in the second quarter as Jax Ramsay got on top from the bounce, and Hugo Poole carried the ball forward.
Rutherglen broke Thurgoona's spirit by putting their foot on the pedal in the second half, led by Aiden Sibraa who had a day out kicking 5 of Rutherglen's 9 goals.
At the end of the match Dusty Fisher received recognition as the best player afield for Rutherglen as part of Naidoc round.
Next week the players will be looking to freshen up with the bye before travelling to take on Kiewa Sandy Creek on July 20.
Awards: Rutherglen Pizza – Liam Colvin, Silver Key Café – Erik Fuge, Corowa Cougars – Hugo Poole, Secret Cat – Jayke O’Malley, Boschetti Electrical – Lucas Zani, Aaron’s Award – Aiden Sibraa.

We travelled to Thurgoona this week and started the game well with Cody O’Donoghue kicking the first goal, at quarter time the scores were very close.
Thurgoona came out on fire in the second quarter kicking a couple of goals in quick succession from there it would be a very even contest with a couple of near misses for goal in the last quarter but unfortunately, we couldn’t quite peg them back with Thurgoona eventually winning the game.
It was a solid performance from the guys well done, amongst the best players were Zac Macumber, Seve Cottam, Cody J Wood, Cody O’Donoghue, Kane Willett, Logan Field and James Nicholson.
Awards: Slopes $10 – Zac Macumber, Silver Key Café – Sevi Cottam, Rutherglen Lolly Shop – Logan Field, Danny Johnson Most Courageous – Cody O’Donoghue, Boschetti Electrical – James Nicholson, Coaches Award – Kane Willett.
