Following this there was pizza and presentations to reflect on a fantastic and very popular competition.
The groups were very evenly matched and this was evident with some very long sets.
At the end of the night the group winners were Tess Bassett, Zoe O’Callaghan, Danielle Lawrence, Kirsten Williams, Laura Nunn, Kiera Buerckner, Vicky Horton and Michelle Barry.
Each of these winners were rewarded with chocolates.
The season’s premiers were announced and this season Lifesavers were successful. This team of Win Win Htwe, Lara Angwin, Laura Nunn and Samantha Webster combined well every week to take the title. Runners up were Calippos consisting of Tess Bassett, Kirsten Williams, Sophie Hanna and Ava Cox.
Well done to organisers Narelle Bassett and Gert Brunner who created 11 even teams ensuring a good hit by every player each week.
More importantly there was a lot of laughter and enjoyment. Another season of Thursday Ladies will commence on February 6, 2025.
Saturday Juniors
Once again the weather was unfavourable and with nearly 25mm of overnight rain, the courts looked more like a swimming pool then tennis courts. This meant that play was not possible.
This means Premier League was not played. This weekend will be the third and final round of Premier League. The ladder after Round 2 is Lions 37, Hoppers 32, Pigeons and Bears 30.
Players who play matches but are not part of the Premier League competition will be involved in the Parent/Child competition. This is always good fun.
All regular coaching, Hot Shots and matchplay will continue as normal. This weekend will be the last Saturday morning before the break.
Wilby Tennis
Round 9 of Wilby Tennis was washed out. This was disappointing as this was to be the annual Gather round and a farewell before the extended Christmas break.
After round 9 the ladder is Tungamah Green 56, Telford 52, Burramine 50, Mulwala Gold 37, Wilby 36, Mulwala Maroon 25, Tungamah Gold 22 and Savernake 10.
This competition will resume on February 1, 2025.
Tuesday Mens Tennis
The Tuesday Mens Round 4 was also washed out. This was the prelude to even more rain later in the week. With two rounds to go prior to Christmas the players will be keen to get back on court this week.
The ladder after round 4 is Nadal 22, Sampras 20, Borg 18, McEnroe 17, Federer 17, Connors 16, Laver 16, Djokovic 15, Wilander 15, Agassi 15, Lendl 13, Becker 12 and Edberg 12.
Goulburn Murray Tennis
Round 7 of Goulburn Murray Tennis was played over the region on Saturday. Representing Numurkah in Division 1, Jack Bassett was in good form to win all of his three sets continuing his season’s undefeated singles streak.
These sets proved valuable as it was a very tight contest with sets shared 6 apiece against Nathalia with Numurkah taking the day by 7 games.
In Division 2 Cobram had a great battle against Nathalia to win 6 sets to 5 and on games by 3. Yarrawonga’s Daryl Bennett continued his good form winning 2 sets whilst youngsters Hayley Bennett and Xavier Chessells both played well and won a set each.
North East Veterans
The final tournament of the North East Veterans circuit before Christmas was played on Sunday at Numurkah.
The courts were in fantastic condition and with perfect weather all in attendance had an enjoyable day.
As usual Yarrawonga’s players performed well. John Brunner and Ellen Bruce both won their groups. Other players who had a good hit were Amy Lairson, Gert Brunner, Aidan Humphry, Ash Wheaton, Mick Ibbott and Mike Lairson.
