Blessed with perfect weather once again there were 95 different events to participate in and over 1800 matches completed across the four days.
Gratitude, kindness, friendliness and generosity were the key values displayed with so many just happy to be on holidays and able to play tennis again after last year’s rolling lockdowns due to COVID-19.
The tournament caters for tennis players of all ages and all abilities, ranging from six years of age to over 70, from D grade to the high quality Open Events. Regardless of age or ability, the Easter Tournament aims to provide a family tournament that caters for all.
In the premier events, the Open Men’s Singles Winner this year was Matthew Allis, defeating Paul Ferguson in straight sets, 6/2, 6/3. The match was very tight but Matthew was able to break Paul’s serve a few times to claim his first singles title in Yarrawonga.
In the Women’s Open Final Louise Fields defeated Monica Biernat in a tight match; 6/2 6/4. Spectators were treated to superb tennis before Louise was able to claim her second singles title in Yarrawonga. Louise has been a regular attendee at the tournament and is deserving of her win.
It was fantastic to see so many locals playing in the tournament. From juniors starting out to players competing in the Open events there was an event for everyone.
Overall local players had success in 18 different events which was awesome. Next year it is hoped there are even more players from the region having a hit.
With so many players also came the many volunteers, without whom this tournament would not be possible. The courts were in immaculate condition thanks to Warrick Henderson, Rob Payne, Ian McDonald and Michael Sheahan who have put in months of preparation, in addition to their morning ritual of getting the dew off the courts.
Tournament Directors Jo McCarthy and Jason Bassett and the tournament players thank you for your outstanding work.
A massive thanks to all the wonderful volunteers without whom the club could not run this event. The early morning crew who clean up, empty bins, check net heights, set up chairs and tables; BBQ and brekky crew; people in the bar; clubhouse, canteen and kiosk workers; tournament box workers; those who set up the courts and those who pack up the courts and of course the hard working committee.
Thanks to the wonderful sponsors who generously support the lawn tennis club and this event annually as the club cannot do this without you: Simply Caravans, Glanmire Park, Yarrawonga Holiday Park, Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort, ClubMulwala, Mulwala Water Ski Club, Wheaton Chiropractic, Golden Inn Chinese Restaurant, Elders, Biggers Floorworld, Yarrawonga College P-12, Hargreaves Joinery and Tiger Grace Consulting.
Jo and Jason hope that everyone had a fantastic weekend and they look forward to the 2023 tournament.
